Hello all, welcome to the second week in our Altered Playing Card Challenge. I am thrilled that so many have expressed interest in taking this journey with me. How fun will it be at the end when we all have a wonderful altered deck of cards?
If you missed the first post regarding the challenge here is a link so you can catch up
By now you should have prepped those playing cards by adding gesso or sanding so here we go....
For my first two cards I decided to use Dylusions Sprays to color the background, these are the selected colors I chose for my cards
I used an old box and some paper towels for spraying my cards
(as you can see one of my cards I doodled into the gesso)
(as you can see one of my cards I doodled into the gesso)
Once I am done spraying the Dylusions I dab the cards with a paper towel to grab some of the excess. If you want to spray more in order to add more color, let dry and then feel free to spritz again
If you do not have Dylusions you can also use acrylic paint or any other medium you have, here is what my card looked like with two colors of paint
The paint seemed more transparent than the Dylusions
and with Dylusions
Once my backgrounds are dry I got to work on the green and yellow one first.
Using a die by Memory Box and some black card stock I made a border for my card.
(No worries if you don't have this die, just use one your have or you can even draw a border on your card with black marker, none should ever feel like they have to use what I did)
I used glossy accents to glue my border onto my card
I then cut out a small butterfly using Tim Holtz movers and shapers butterfly die and using a scroll word stamp (Hero Arts) and black versafine ink I stamped onto my butterfly
Using a white gel pen I went over the doodle on the side of my card (made previously with the gesso) and also doodled a bit on my flower border
using my Prismacolor black pen I edged my card with black (I do this a lot)
I like my butterflys wings to stand up so I adhered my butterfly with a zot right in the center, if you want yours flat just glue the entire butterfly to the card
I used a Stampotique Stamp for two of my words
you can find this stamp
and I used a Stampin Up stamp for the "your" word (just mask of the rest of the words and stamp the word you want)
you can also write your sentiment or print something from your printer if you don't want to use stamps
Whalla!! First card done! As you can see, I'm in love with color, I like bright bold colors and I will be making various colored background for our deck.
for the next card I used digi stamps from Janet Klein's Vera Lane Studio Etsy Shop
Janet is also offering a 20% discount for a limited time. Use Coupon code ALTER52 when ordering.
I will be using these digi stamps throughout the 6 months on various cards so go scoop some of these wonderful stamps up while the coupon is good.
Also, Janet did an awesome tutorial on how to work with digi stamps
on her blog HERE

Back to my tutorial....... Simply print out your digi in the size needed for the card
my girl was printed about 2"x 1 3/4" or so
I recommend using quality paper to print your image, I used Ranger specialty paper
I then colored my image with copic markers
Lastly cut your images out and adhere them to the front of your card
If you did not end up with a speckled background, you can make those speckles with a white gel pen, I like how it looks like she is flying through the stars
I also added a small piece of black wash tape to the bottom of my card
A helpful tip, be careful when glueing your images down, sometimes the dylusions spray inks come off on your fingers, I smudged my girls dress
Here are the two finished card for this week

ReplyDeleteI have to tell you a funny story about this. My friend Jan told me she was doing this project and invited me to do it as well. As an afterthought she says, "Terry is doing it with me." I laughed and jokingly said, maybe we should ask my husband!" We asked and he is on board as well. I couldn't be more shocked! This will be a fun and hilarious ride for the 4 of us!
