Flip Frame Butterfly Project

Hello everyone and welcome back to the blog. Today I would like to share a tutorial on how I made this beautiful flip frame. The flip frame is by Ranger and Tim Holtz and I think there is a ton of potential on what you can do with it.

To begin, I grabbed a piece of cardboard (cut to fit the flip frame) and glued a piece of cardstock to it. I chose this paper because I really like the light green and also the images

I knew I wanted to use the Tim Holtz Mosaic kit again (I used this on the last Christmas project I made)

I began by adding the grout to my background in the area I wanted to do mosaic. I set this aside to dry thoroughly

While that was drying I began working on my tiles.. I grabbed some printed paper and cut it into the mosaic shapes

I also stamped my butterfly image onto white cardstock and colored it with copic markers

This butterfly came from the stamp set called "Perspective"

I also used some thin metal wire to go around my butterfly's body and used this as the antenna 

Once my background grout was dry I began glueing my mosaic piecing onto it with the glue provided in the kit

This is how it looked once I was done

Next I took the glaze and added that to my mosaic tiles

This is where it starts to look so cool

I set this aside to dry

While the glaze was drying I took some black cardstock and cut out the word Majic with Tim's "happy holidays" thinlits set

Once my tiles were dry, I used distress ink on my grout and tiles. I used a wipe to clean the ink off my tiles and it stays on the grout in the background

I also went around all my edges with the ink 

Once all that was done, I played everything out not my background so that I can see what it will look like when it's done before I glue

I used distress stain to color a piece of ribbon for the bottom of my final piece

After everything was done and dry, this is what my piece turned out looking like

I just love it, I think it turned out perfect. The flip frame and mosaic kits are becoming my favorites!!!

Altered Playing Card Challenge Week 23

This week I'm focusing on using "masks" to create a really cool background. I want the backgrounds to stand out so I'm not using many images over them.

I started out with two playing cards and used acrylic paint for my first step. For my two cards I used a gold and a light blue, set aside to dry (your going to want a lighter color for your background, we will be adding a darker shade over it)

For this next step, there are a few ways to make a mask to use, Tim Holtz has mask sheets, you can find at your local craft store) that have adhesive backs, you can cut these sheets to any shape

You can also use a die and card stock

In this case, I'm using both so you can see how they both work

I decided to go with this new Tim Holtz thinlits die set for one of my masks

Just simply use both card stock and the mask sheets with your die

I cut the black card stock using Tim's new die first

For my second mask I used Tim's framework die and his mask sheets

and I ended up with these two masks to use

For this first card I used Tim's clear mask sheets and adhered the diamonds and the outline here and there onto my card

Once I had the mask where I wanted it I used adirondack color in a shade of brown and a distress tool to go over my card and mask pieces

Once you have the desired amount of darker ink over your card, simply peel your mask off and reveal your design

For card two, do the same thing, I used a piece of removable adhesive to keep my mask in place, I chose a shade of blue that was slightly darker than my background paint

Here is how my two backgrounds came out (I also edged them with ink)

Next, I placed my masks back onto my cards because I realized I wanted to stamp over them as well (you can do this step without removing your mask first, which is recommended)

For the blue card, I chose a color and stamped my stamp over the mask, as you can see I put the mask back in the exact same place and used a piece of painters tape to hold it

Since I only had one mask, I stamped and I then moved the mask and stamped again with a different stamp this time

Now my card looks like this, the mask acts as a barrier so the space stays untouched

Same step for the second card, then peel off the mask pieces

Next I simply stamped my main image in black right on top of this background, I also added a few words to my card

Here is what my card looks like when finished

For the next (blue) card, I used my heat gun to dry the card really well before stamping my main image. I want to heat emboss this image so I wanted to make sure my card was really dry.

I stamped my image and heat embossed in black

Next I used several different colors of acrylic paint to color bits of her

and lastly I added a word, here is my finished card

I really love how the use of masks make my background stand out. Love it! I hope you have fun playing with masking this week too.

Since we have Valentine's Day coming up I figured I would dedicate this week to "Hearts/Love"

I am still playing with that box of DecoArt products that I received so I am using some of those for my backgrounds this week

I got these DecoArt Misters and I used those to create both of my background this week, they are simply paints in a spray bottle

For this yellow backed card I first sprayed the yellow over the entire background and then for the red portion, I spritzed the bottle lightly (without pushing the sprayer all the way down and pushing the sprayer slowly) to create splatters
You can create splatters by using a paintbrush also, just dip your paintbrush into your paint and tap your brush over your project to create splatters

Next I used some patterned papers that my friend, Tanager  sent to me,  she created these herself

For this first one, I used a stamp by Roc Nicholas called Flying Heart I heat embossed the heart and then cut it out

I then used the media paints to color in the little heart 

I did have to cut off the wings and position them differently so they would fit on my card but it all worked out

I used this stamp by Janet Klein and archival ink to create a border

I cut out the word "forever" from a Sizzix Tim Holtz die

Once everything was done my card came out like this

(I colored in some of my ribbon border with white gel pen)

For the next card I used this background paper, also created by my friend Tanager

I used a black sharpie marker to draw my own hearts and then cut them out

I also used that plain black washi tape that I found at JoAnns in the clearance section

I glued my hearts on first

 and then tore the washi tape and added it onto my card, I then wrote my words onto my washi tape with white gelli pen

I added little dots around the edges with my black Enamel Accents

I hope you like this week's cards, they aren't your traditional "love/heart" cards but I kinda like that

Next week we will be using clear embossing paste, I think clear is tough to figure out and a lot of people ask me how to use it
